In anticipation of the transfer of sovereignty from the UK to China in 1997, the Royal Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force (RHKAAF) under the jurisdiction of the Hong Kong Government began to expand its staff establishment in the early 1990s to prepare for assuming responsibilities formerly held by the UK Royal Air Force.
1988
After the RHKAAF was disbanded on 31 March 1993, the Government Flying Service (GFS) was established on the following day, 1 April 1993. The GFS took over all duties, personnel, 16 aircraft, and facilities previously owned by the RHKAAF in Kai Tak.
1993
On 20 February 1997, GFS fixed-wing aircraft Beech Super King Air (B-HZM) became the first landing aircraft at Chek Lap Kok.
1997
GFS Headquarters relocated to the Hong Kong International Airport in Chak Lap Kok.
1998
In August 2000, the GFS and the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine jointly organised the "Air Medical Officer Programme" to train medical personnel to become Air Medical Officers (air doctors) and Air Medical Nursing Officers (air nurses) under the GFS Auxiliary Section. The program aimed to equip them with the skills necessary to provide emergency treatment to injured or sick individuals on site and during transit to the hospital.
2000
Introduced two Bombardier Challenger 605 into fixed-wing fleet.
2016
Introduced seven Airbus H175 into helicopter fleet.
2018
Construction of Kai Tak Division was completed and operational. It will provide the public with more efficient emergency services.
2022
The Flight Simulation Training Center (FSTC) entered into service, providing comprehensive simulation training to pilots which enhances their ability to respond during missions.
